Herefordshire Meadows had another successful year in 2024 supporting the creation of 58ha of species-rich grasslands at 21 sites across Herefordshire including:
- 21.96ha of floodplain meadow was created in the Wye Valley National Landscape (formerly known as AONB) thanks to their Farming in Protected Landscapes funding.
- 4.44ha was created as part of Herefordshire Council’s Natural Flood Management project.
- 15.1ha of lowland meadow was created in the Malvern Hills National Landscape again thanks to funding from the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.
- 16.64ha was created in the north of the county with funding from the former Kingspan Insulation Community Trust.
And in addition to that…
- 20.5ha of species-rich grassland was enhanced thanks to funding from the Environment Agency’s Water Environment Improvement Fund (WEIF)
- 8.8ha was enhanced with additional yellow rattle seed in North Herefordshire in partnership with Buglife, as part of their Get the Marches Buzzing Project.
This year’s work brings the 6-year total to around 297 hectares of species rich grassland created across the county!
Thank you to all our partners and funders, and all the landowners committed to creating species-rich grassland on their properties and managing them sympathetically long-term.
Thanks also to the 6 landowners who allowed us to harvest wildflower seed from their high-quality meadows, which was used to create 29.36ha of new species-rich grassland at 13 sites.
In addition to the above restoration works, Herefordshire Meadows has provided management advice to 22 landowners in the county via our Advisory Service, helping them to create and preserve species-rich grassland on their properties.
